I’m an American living in Halifax, and the tragedy of Africville and the denial displayed by the local and federal government, the total unwillingness to admit that a great wrong was done, fills me with disgust. Canada always prides itself on its belief in racial equality and respect for all cultures, but I’m finding now that there is a lot of hidden, cowardly hypocrisy regarding racism here and it disappoints me terribly. I really can’t understand how such a thing could have happened here. At least racism in the US was open and unashamed. Here, it hides behind bland smiles and false statements of empathy. - DS
