This short film explores the hopes and dreams, anxieties, and struggles
that faced the Recksiedler family, like other German Immigrants on their arrival to Canada, as part of the
first wave of immigration to the Canadian West in the early 1890’s. The Recksiedler story is a story of
escaping the threat of war and increasingly hostile anti-German sentiments in the Russian lands they
had farmed for decades, and a call from across the ocean for 160 acres of free land for those that were
able and willing to take on a new country and new opportunities.
